Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever tried to have 25 students run the Fitnessgram Pacer test while 50 others sit and wait their turn? This annual fitness assessment supports students as they develop personal goals for lifelong health.

My students come from all over NYC, with most being from low income areas.

They love to challenge themselves and each other through the fitnessgram challenges where they perform push-ups, curl-ups, sit and reach, and the trunk-lift. Each year they are given the test, they are challenged to improve their scores from the previous year. It is very rewarding to see them beat their previous scores and challenge each other. It gives a real sense of achievement when a student can now do 25 push-ups instead of the 4 from the previous year. The boom-box will allow me to properly administer the tests to a large group of students while following the official prompts.

My Project

This snapshot of a physical challenge does not compare one student to another. Results are based on whether an individual student is in healthy zone for their age and sex. More than 850,000 students each year take home a NYC Fitnessgram report to share with family and health care providers. Reports spark conversations about eating habits and levels of physical activity needed for good health. Fitnessgram supports students in learning about and measuring components of health-related fitness: aerobic capacity, muscle strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition.

This boom-box will help to properly administer tests.

Teachers, students, parents, and health care providers can use these standards to help students set personal goals to improve their health-related fitness. The reports offer teachers and schools an opportunity to include all members of the school community in conversations, presentations, health fairs, or workshops focused on health and fitness.
