My students need two sets of speed stacks, a no miss mitt, and 10 fling socks to use during physical education activities in order to accommodate a paraplegic student in the classroom.
Close your eyes and imagine a class of third graders where every student, even a child in a wheelchair, can participate during physical activities.
I teach third grade in a rural, extremely low-income area of Indiana. I have a class of third grade students, one of which is a paraplegic student in a wheelchair.
I strive to be the best educator I can be for my students. Indiana state standards require many things of me; however, my strongest concern is for my disabled student. I want the opportunity to, not only play games and provide him with physical activity during physical education, but to provide him with the same opportunities as the other students have.
I need sets of stackers, a no miss mitt, and fling socks, so that we can play games that include him fully. No matter how humble, this child deserved the right to be involved in every single activity that is offered.
Please give me the opportunity and the resources to involve all of my students equally and to engage them all physically.
