Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a first grade teacher to 20 children, including 1 special needs child, in Lawndale, California. My class contains many children on free or reduced breakfast and lunch. My class is mostly second language learners.

Our nation is facing a huge obesity epidemic. Part of the problem is that children are learning to lead sedentary lives due to all their electronic games. Children no longer play outside after school. Their neighborhoods are either too dangerous, or they are just lazy. I feel it is my responsibility to expose them to the fun you can have when exercising. BUT... due to budget cuts we only have access to a trained PE teacher for a half hour twice a month. Also, there isn't much money for classroom equipment. Many of my children bring their own balls from home. But, if they lose them then they no longer have a ball for home.

This donation will help me so much. Our school is trying to push healthy eating by teaming up with the Nutrition Network... but we are lacking in the PE area. So, I would love to take on the task of teaching my students that physical activity can be fun. That is why I am asking for 12 jump ropes, a balancing ball game so they can work on coordination, a set of number activity mats that comes with 6 different activity cards and the bucket blast activity game. This kit comes with everything I would need to play 15 exciting games designed to get kids running, tossing, balancing and working in teams. The kids can wear the buckets around their waists for a fun version of beanbag basketball... or use them in relay races, memory games, beanbag toss and more. It includes 6 buckets with belts, 24 beanbags, 6 blindfolds, 4 cones and an activity guide. These materials are great because it doesn't promote "winning". They encourage having fun.

Thank you in advance for considering funding this proposal. The children will have so much fun using these materials to play and move during PE time. The jump ropes can be used during recess time as well. This is a proposal that will be used for years to come.
