This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Remember growing up outside while playing a variety of games and sports with your friends? Unfortunately, urban Brooklyn students do not have this opportunity. Help us build a safe environment in physical education where they can remain active while learning a variety of sports and fitness skills.

Our students come from a variety of different demographics.

Most of them come from families that are poor and struggle while living pay check to pay check. They watch their parents struggle to keep food on the table and many of them work so hard because they want their life to be easier and more successful. Our school is a not-for-profit charter school that keeps expectations much higher than your average public school. Our students work diligently on an everyday basis to surpass the norm.

My Project

The equipment we are requesting will help expose our students to a variety of different sports and fitness skills. We are attempting to start a new tennis unit this year and teach our students the basics of a sport most of them only know by name. They will learn how to use resistance bands to do a variety of exercises including upper body strength training, core body exercises and even leg exercises. We will also use the stereo during the fitness unit to keep our students more motivated during the activities. We are also planning to add a dance unit next year. This year we added a softball unit in the spring and our students loved it however, we were limited on mitts. We hope to increase participation and time on task by adding more mitts to our equipment.

With the obesity epidemic growing at alarming rates it it imperative that we ensure that students remain active throughout their life.

Our goal is to expose students to as many activities as possible so that they can find something that they love to do throughout their life. Our goal is long term. Lifelong fitness and awareness is what we are striving for.
