This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Physical education in the gym is fun and exciting, but sometimes loud and overwhelming for students. Here in the Lower East Side in NYC, our students are diverse with a wide range of backgrounds, needs, and learning styles. In order to best fit the needs of all of my students, I am creating a space within the gym where they can take some time to relax and focus on their personal needs to calm themselves.

While I already have a variety of breathing/calm down tools and activities, what is missing are the comfort pieces that will create a secure safe space.

A beanbag chair, floor cushions, sand timers, headphones, and floor desks (and a few sensory tools) will ensure my students can find the space to reset when they are experiencing big feelings and be able to enjoy their physical education experience to the fullest.

A huge part of physical education is learning how to be in touch with one's own body. I encourage my students to pay attention to what they are feeling and to take action if they feel overly anxious, frustrated, angry, or upset. I teach a variety of skills so students can be proactive and take charge of their own mental and emotional wellbeing, now it's time to add to the space so they can truly take the time to focus on themselves.
