My Students

Our school in Aurora, Colorado is one of the most diverse schools in the state. We have been dubbed an "international school," and our yearbook staff reflects that title.

For my staffers, who collectively speak over five languages and represent cultures from all around the globe, student journalism isn't just an opportunity for them to learn digital media skills; it's a chance to think critically about whose stories are told, and how different communities are represented in the media.

Yearbook is a co-curricular class and club that empowers student journalists with the tools and knowledge to connect to their community and world in order to create a historical artifact that highlights student voices that might otherwise go unheard.

My Project

Purchasing additional lenses for my yearbook staff will allow more students to gain experience photographing sporting events with the professional equipment.

The pandemic exposed the gaps in technology and equipment that our students have access to.

Providing the staff with more lenses means that more students will be given the opportunity to share their stories with the world. In the past, we have relied on students purchasing their own photo material, but as a journalism adviser, it is important for me to give advanced photography opportunities to more students by having more equipment available to them.

Because we are a club and a class, all of our budget comes from yearbook and ad sales. In this tough economy, we are having to rethink our funding, and need community support to get technology into student hands.
