My Students

Express yourself! My students are looking for different artistic ways to express themselves this year in my art class and Art Club. I would love 10 digital cameras to issue to the kids so they can capture local images from their own communities and share them in a year long school exhibit.

The public middle school students at MHAST come from low income communities from all over the Bronx, NY.

Their school is new and replaces a failing middle school that was shut down last year. Most of the children are very creative and seem to gravitate to the arts. I am trying to expose them to as many different forms of art as possible. A year long photography exhibit with rotating images taken from their own neighborhoods would be a fabulous way to introduce the students to the wonderful world of photography.

My Project

These 10 cameras will be issued out to 10 students at a time on a weekly basis, rotating through different classes. The students can photograph their neighborhoods and document whatever images they choose to share. I think this photography project will be very powerful and allow them to get hooked on art! Imagine the proud feelings a 13 year old boy or girl will have as their photographs are displayed at the school for all the world to see!

This project is so important because I am trying to create an Art Department that is vibrant and full of different types of artistic mediums.

By allowing the students a chance to express themselves through photography, they will be more likely to enjoy school. Enjoying school is a key component to becoming a life long learner, as well as a lover of the arts. This photography project and my overall goal of having a fantastic art department will change the lives of many students!!
