Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Have you ever wondered what the world looks like to young people? Well, my students would like to document specific events and activities and express their view of the world through the Photography Club. I currently teach science, but I am an independent contractor as a professional photographer. I have 12 years experience as a professional photographer.

I remember when I first registered for a photography course. It was during my sophomore year in college and I enjoyed it so much I received a degree in Pre-Medical Studies and 32 credits in art (photography courses). I discovered my artistic way of expressing myself through photography. I would like to do the same for my students. This is why I decided to establish an after-school program in which students were allowed to express themselves and they would develop a talent for photography. I started the Photography Club without any supplies. My job had cameras of 4 megapixels, and it was important to use a camera with more than 4 megapixels for printing purposes. I then used my personal camera to continue the Introduction to Photography course, which was with a Canon XS. My students understood that we only had one professional camera and it delayed my learning goals. Nevertheless, my students had weekly assignments in which we printed the photographs and analyzed them in order to improve photographic techniques.

In order to continue the growing demands of my Photography Club, I need another Canon XS camera. This year I will have two different levels, beginners and advanced. Both classes will meet for 2 hours once a week simultaneously. If I have another camera, I can have 2 different lessons taking place. The students taking the introduction course can learn the basics; in addition, the advanced students will learn more advanced techniques while still mastering their basic techniques. My students asked me if I would have the Photography Club the following school year, and I asked them why do they like the photography club, and some of them stated that they liked it because it was fun, engaging, and they didn’t have any worries about getting a grade while still learning how to become a photographer. In addition, one student stated, “I always liked photography and I wanted to take a course but they are very expensive, and I can’t afford it. This way I can learn from you and hopefully work for myself as a photographer.”

Your help will be greatly appreciated. My students will be able to work more efficiently with the use of one Canon XS. Most of their work is fantastic, considering they only had a year to learn basic materials and we only meet 2 hours a week. I can only imagine their potential if we had an extra camera to work with. Who knows? Maybe they will appreciate photography the way my professors allowed me to appreciate photography, and this way we can see the way young people see the world through their artistic photographs.
