My Students
Every public school student should have the opportunity to practice democracy while learning about it; however, without a proper digital camera my journalism students are unable to add effective enhancing photography to our school newspaper and expand our coverage to include video and Internet.
My journalism staff is made up of students from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds in grades 7-12.
As students at a public middle/high school in New York City they practice enacting their 1st Amendment Rights by covering school, community, national and international events, following current events at both the local, national and international level, and they are skilled in conducting press conferences for which we invite local politicians, educators and professionals once each month. Last year, my staff and I started the high school newspaper, using basic digital cameras. Now, to grow our publication, the staff needs to enhance the photography. As part of our first publication, and first unit, we will develop our photography staff by expanding it to include a videography and multimedia component, both for which a camera with more advanced capabilities will allow.
My Project
My students will practice democracy while learning about democracy. Freedom of the press starts in the classroom, and scholastic publications are essential for student expression. Student journalists become media savvy, globally connected individuals who understand about the world beyond their classroom. Running a school newspaper teaches them a plethora of skills: business through fund raising, persuasive writing for multiple stories, community interaction through coverage and interaction with guest speakers, cooperative people skills through editorial and staff meetings, and organizational skills necessary to pull off the tasks involved in taking an issue from pitch to print.
The most important aspect in any newspaper is its photography.
Photography alone tells a complete story. Thus, students journalists and a newspaper staff need the tools necessary to bring the entire story to their readers.
