My Students

Photography documents our world and our lives, and it's a great way to bring technology to my students. I always use visual stimuli with students to engage their learning for a deeper understanding. We will look at Civil War images created by Brady and Gardner and then create our own images.

My students this year are all high achieving students who need some extra support in technology.

While the school is successful with developing students and reaching standards it does lack in technology, which I think is so essential in developing the whole child and preparing them for the future advancements of technology. My classroom has some diversity but they are mostly Hispanic kids. The school as a whole experiences some transiency. Lots of students who are designated as Gifted are moving to very high achieving schools who are more technologically advanced in supporting the child. I want to change that and keep my students here. While this school has its successes, there's always room for growth. My students want every opportunity to grow and become great contributors to society. They are GREAT kids, and I look forward to seeing them and witnessing their growth as they are inspired by the visual tool of the camera and how it can tell their story.

My Project

My students will be using the cameras to capture images that speak of their story. They will learn how to capture the portrait and landscape. They will learn how to use light or the absence of it. They will understand how to use the technology and develop their craft in the classroom elevating their basic understanding of photography. I use images in my literature units to help engage and illustrate difficult vocabulary, so my students will also use these cameras to deepen their understanding of vocabulary. As part of the curriculum and after school art activities, I will have students develop a portfolio of images to display in a gallery toward the end of the year. One of my favorite projects is to have students recreate Civil War-type images in sepia tones after they have examined other photographers from the era. In the past this gallery has been a big draw, and it's absolutely amazing to see how wonderful students can engage the audience through their work.

We have all been using cameras for many years now to capture familial events and the like, but this year students will learn the power of photography and how it speaks so loudly to so many of us.

Students are already visually inclined, so I think it important to develop this talent so that they understand the complexity of images, and that the published work we see is usually not just some random image, but a developed sense of artistic talent that has been sought out.
