This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Math class isn't just about simple computation. The practices today include critical thinking, persistent problem solving and more. But to share in this learning process, we need a window into their minds.

My students are precocious 8th graders who love and strongly dislike math.

They have mixed-level abilities, meaning that there is a mix of students with special needs or struggling problem solvers. In our classroom, they have two teachers to assist them. Students love to share their learning discoveries with each other but need easy ways to document their works-in-progress and final projects.

My Project

Our classroom needs a digital camera to document how they progress in learning important math ideas and also their polished final projects. A camera can also help create visual aids and guides to help students successfully reach new understandings. One activity we could do is as part of small group learning, a group could photograph their work with math manipulatives and practices, and then use these to teach it out to other struggling students.

Students should have the opportunity to be able to love where their next math project is coming from.

Allowing groups of students to photograph their work process helps to celebrate and learn from mistakes. It's all in the journey, not the destination.
