About My Students

"Hey, look at this shot! I used the rule of thirds." and "Why is this shot so dark right here?" are some of the ways my students begin a conversation with me. These particular students have a passion for photography. While this passion has been blooming the need for more materials and funding in our economically strapped district has also been blooming. The great thing about my students is how much they love this school and this subject matter. I have interested students, Elizabeth, Hunter, Madie, Kailey and Jozalyn, who want to be part of the solution not just wait on someone else to solve their problems. These are the kinds of people who will work for a better future for not only for themselves but other people as well. Due to the many times we have tried to learn a particular concept and our lack of materials have hampered our learning, my students have decided to create funding opportunities of their own. Help my students help themselves and others to a better future.

With this project students will gain more than basic photography skills. The will learn to shoot in manual mode, and perfect the correct ratio between ISO. Apperture and Shutter Speed. They will also be using the proper lighting and editing work in Lightroom. They will learn to create and run their own business and balance their budget. Through working with the public, they will gain valuable insight into the adult world. All of this, along with a strong sense of ownership will enable our students to gain much needed confidence and pride in their skills. Finally, they will be dealing with people therefore they will have to learn how to solve the problems that will inevitably arrive once they begin project.

In Their Own Words

This grant would allow for my fellow classmates and I to become true business owners while perfecting our photography skills. This project enables us to practice photography at any time, not just when the weather permits.

This set of lighting and backdrops means we will be able to offer portrait photography for a reasonable price to people in our community. We will be able to raise the money for any "extras" we need for our photography class and our photography club. We will be the "owners" of our own business. Just the idea of being able to raise the funds we need instead of asking the administration is empowering.

When you take pictures you have the opprutunity to tell your story through them. This grant for the equipment will enable us to grow in many ways, be it with photographic skills, social skills, or problem solving.

This project is our idea so we feel strongly the we will be able to set high standards. Within our group we always try to be open, and understanding of everyone's ideas and thoughts. We love to work as a united group. In working together we are able to expand our group as a whole. This equipment would allow for us to have more opportunities to expand our education, social skills, and creative minds. We will learn how to create, sell and advertise for our business. Hands on experience is the best teacher. We can't wait to get started.

Coming from a rural farming community we do not have very many opportunities to put our creativity to use. In photography we thought there wasn't a way to use our skills to improve the quality of life in our community. Then we realized that there is no place where our community can go to get reasonably priced portraits. For example, seniors have very hard time to getting reasonablity priced portraits for their senior pictures. With this equipment we would be able to provide more opportunities for people in our community to have portraits taken. We want to shoot Santa portraits at Christmas and Easter Bunny photos in the spring. We hope to help everyone in our community to capture special moments.
