Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have slowly introduced the idea of photography to my students and it has excited them. I now have a photography club, and the demand is growing rapidly. "Photography takes an instant out of time, altering life by holding it still." - Ernst Hass

My class is located in a high poverty/high needs area located in NYC.

The class is predominantly Hispanic and Black with a mixture of both English Language Learners, general education students, and special needs students. My students display creativity through art, music, and dance; many have never seen or used photography as a way of expression. By opening their eyes and sharing my passion for photography I know I will be able to leave a lasting memory on them.

My Project

Academic learning is a crucial part of our 4th grade curriculum, but at times it lacks the interest level to captivate my students. With all subjects being common core driven the need for an additional creative outlet is a necessity. Students will now learn about photography, and hopefully even start a club. We will use these materials to capture moments throughout the year both in our class and outside of the classroom. Students will photograph each other during publishing parties, theatrical performances, and even on field trips. The benefit of this camera is that it is both waterproof and shockproof making it perfect for fourth grade students!

Donations to this project will improve my classroom by offering a way for students to express themselves.

It will also help motivate them to learn through an additional way. Students will build a community in our classroom by valuing each other and working in groups to photograph specific events that are significant to our class and school.
