Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine being inspired to make a positive change in your school and then come up with great ideas to help foster this change, only to realize you can't move forward because you lack the resources to accomplish it.

My students come from a poor neighborhood where there have been recent violent crimes committed near the school.

Despite these obstacles, they come to school with an eagerness to learn and to help one another. They have been actively involved in learning and promoting character values such as respect, responsibility, and honesty. I helped launch an initiative at our school called 'Respect for All, By All' to address bullying and to strengthen students' personal character traits. We focus as a school on a character trait each month through discussions, literature, music and the arts, and we try to incorporate them throughout the curriculum. I teach character enrichment at my school which is a PreK-5th grade public school.

My Project

Having a printer and ink in the classroom will enable students to finish their work on the great ideas that they came up with to help with our initiative. Students would be able to print pictures that they took of classroom activities and of school assemblies and shows. They would also be able to print pictures to use as posters or flyers that could be used to help bring awareness to this issue. Students can also take pictures to include in their self-made books related to a character trait. Posting student work will also help boost students' self-esteem, which in turn, will help bring a positive change to the overall school climate. These activities would be in conjunction with projects that include public awareness videos/slide shows, peer mediation training, and special assemblies.

I think enriching our students' character values is very important.

Nowadays, kids receive messages from the media, music, and in video games that at times, seems to devalue character traits such as respect and kindness. When we empower students to have a strong and positive personal character, we give them the best possible chance to succeed academically, socially, mentally, and emotionally. This in turn can strengthen the school and its community. I hope you share our vision.
