My Students

My school currently serves approximately 350 students in grades 6-8. My students come from homes with range from farms to public housing and everything in between. Most are from economically disadvantaged homes, as 100% of our students receive a free breakfast, lunch, and after school dinner.

Our motto here is that we are a "family." The students and staff alike have bought into this message of respect and compassion.

We provide them with a safe learning environment and try to meet each and every student's academic and personal needs. We feel if they are safe and comfortable, there are no limits to what they can achieve.

Our students have overcome many hardships by the time they come to us in the 8th grade. As a teacher, you set out to make a difference thinking you have something to offer your students, when in reality, it is often the students that do the most teaching.

My Project

This activity actually has several different benefits. First and foremost, our students will have the opportunity to view Science in a hands-on and engaging manner. Our guest speaker from the Bayer Corporation performs many experiments at our after-school family night that the students also have an opportunity to participate in themselves. I was inspired by Mrs. I's project, "Chemistry in our World" and hope to achieve her same goals.

Many of our students come from low-income environments, and therefore have very limited exposure to post-high school opportunities.

It is a goal of ours here to open their minds and attitudes towards various difference professional avenues, especially in the fast-growing area of Science. This after-school event will allow us to advertise the world of Science and help our students explore possible jobs, while being able to use current technology to record and present. The students will use our camcorder to record the event and use the film to create a presentation to share with our other grade levels and parents.
