My Students

If you can Dream it, you can do it. This quote from Walt Disney is my class motto this year. My students all dream of being great readers and writers. They love that moment when they read a new word or sound out a new word when writing.

I am teaching a combination Kindergarten/First Grade this year.

I have 21 wonderful students who range in ability from learning how to write their names, to students who are writing simple 3 sentence paragraphs. I work in a great school, that has amazing parent support but limited funding. The students are hard working and eager to learn. They light up when they have mastered a new skill.

My Project

I am requesting materials to fit the phonics needs of my first graders. At the beginning of the year, we are working on building our phonics skills to develop our reading and writing. This is the time to start learning blends, digraphs, nouns, verbs, and how bigger words are made of all these things put together. They are moving beyond simple 3 and 4 letter words into words where e can change a vowels sound. This is a big deal for us!

When a 6 or 7 year old can actually build and create words with manipulatives, they are learning them in a very concrete way. My students need these skills to be the amazing readers and writers I know they can be.
