My Students

My students are creative, hilarious, and endearingly hopeful children who love to learn. Their eager faces greet me everyday, ready to learn. They are English as a Second Language learners who do not hear the English language beyond our school. Their parents do not have the English language skills to ask them questions about their learning or reinforce lessons learned in school. I am teaching Special Education in addition to my English as a Second Language population. In order to truly differentiate my teaching and address all the needs of my students, I want to reach the wide range of interests. My students are eager and curious children who enjoy learning. I teach at a Title 1 school, meaning that nearly all of my students live below the nation-wide poverty line. Beyond the classroom, my students rarely interact with English. These new resources would excite the students' naturally inquisitive minds and motivate them to explore topics beyond my explicit teachings.

My Project

It is my hope that I will be able to use these requested resources during our Word Work time. My children are missing the essential skills it takes to be a good reader, which include the basic letter and vowel sounds. These skills seem simple, yet are incredibly challenging for non-Native English speakers to learn without direct instruction.

However, learning phonics through rote practice and repetition can be boring, so I wanted to find a fun way to reinforce these skills through games and play.

Small group work bears fruitful discussion through play and allows each student to interact and learn without pressure. I've chosen to order games like "Can Do! Phonics" which is like a quick draw game for phonemic awareness and pronunciation of English sounds. I've also chosen to order games like "Sight Word Bingo," "Word Families" learning center and "Grammar" board games using dinosaurs and kitchen recipes. It is my hope that students will be able to listen and play together and thereby work and read in small groups to better understand the rules of English that we have internalized.
