Phonics Foundations - Learning to Read and Write

My students need four self-guided activities for literacy centers: Word Building Puzzles and Center, Sound Switch Learning Center, and several Writing Flip Books.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are working hard to learn a new language--English! Learning how to read and write in their new language can be difficult. Their confidence with English will soar as they work in pairs to build their reading and writing skills through these activities.

My students are English Language Learners from mostly Spanish-speaking countries.

Many of them are brand-new to the United States. I enjoy helping them acclimate both socially and academically to their new country. In addition to language learning, another challenge that some of my students face is one of poverty. Our school is a Title I school. Many of our students come from low socio-economic backgrounds. Literacy tends to be low on the list of needs and priorities when paying the bills and knowing that you will be able to eat takes first place.

My Project

These materials will be used with English Language Learners (ELLs) to establish foundations of literacy. Students with low English proficiency will work on phonics as a foundation of learning how to read. These materials will allow me to reinforce systemic teaching with fun and memorable activities. The students will be able to work in pairs to build a variety of words including 3-letter words and words with double consonant blends and digraphs. The materials will also allow my students to improve their word spelling and story writing.

These materials can be reused over and over again, from year to year.

I am excited to start using them immediately! I am thankful that I will be able to use them each year for future groups of students. These activities will become a permanent part of our ELL classroom.
