About My Students

It's not the first time Jadiyyah, Tiamatti, Jesenia, Rebecca, Kiara, Jenly, Marquis, Selena, Juju, and Marquan told a story. Their daily lives provide them with ample material for compelling stories to captivate anyone's ear who's willing to listen. But, it's the first time for most of them that they've been able to share with a greater audience.

"Audio Diaries" members come from the "Badlands", Kensington, West Philly, North Philly, and Frankford. They all are students of an alternative high school that offers young people who are over age and under-credited a unique environment to attain their high school diploma. These students enrolled in a podcast workshop hope to share their stories on the radio, but need quality recording devices to do so. If we were able to have 10 Sony Voice Recorders they would be able to record their voices and the sounds of their lives wherever they go.

These students are working together to improve their storytelling skills so that their experiences can impact a greater audience. In our weekly workshop, we tell our stories and analyze how to make them interesting to all ears and to be sure any messages we want to give are clear.

Through our podcast workshop, students learn both to collaborate and to speak up for themselves. It's a transformative experience that changes the students, teachers, and we hope someday a radio audience as well.

In Their Own Words

The goal we are trying to accomplish is turning our lives into audio stories. If we each had the Sony Voice Recorders we'd document ourselves daily, then pull it together to make a radio story.

People don't always see us as we really are. Getting our stories recorded and heard can help let the world know that we are more than just kids from "the hood".

"What I'm aiming for is to create a story amazing enough to be broadcast on a radio sooner or later. I know I have a lot of potential, it just needs work." --Jadiyyah

We get to partner with a local journalist, so I know I can gain real-world skills from the lessons she is going to share with us.

This project is important to my school and myself because it gives us a chance to express ourselves, build podcasting skills, and gives us a chance to expand our interests. Our school is underfunded, so there's nothing in the budget for extracurricular interests. But we need and deserve resources just like rich districts and schools get to have. The quality equipment will help people to see the quality that is in us.
