The culturally diverse students at my performing arts high school learn much more than the arts - they learn the sciences too! My AP Psychology classes will be learning over 1000 vocabulary terms in order to understand the curriculum as well as perform well on the College Board AP Exam in the Spring of 2025.
What better way to marry both of their learning passions of the arts and the sciences, than to work with renowned artist Victor Stabin!
Victor has developed a teaching curriculum that helps children hone their creative writing skills, improve their literacy skills; such as reading and vocabulary acquisition, and encourage their artistic vision. In Victor's unique method of teaching - students learn new words by reading through the dictionary, and in our classroom's case - their AP Psychology textbook - and then depict these new words with visual narratives. My students will be integrating their creativity with their academic coursework all while reinforcing word meaning, term recognition, and memory.
In this 2-day virtual workshop, students will choose psychology terms that resonate with them and then work to create drawings that illustrate their definitions. They will also have an opportunity to get constructive, actionable feedback from the artist himself which will prepare them for working with college professors or other authorities in their future fields of study and work. This masterclass, that will take place virtually, will not only help students view psychological terminology in a new way, but also help them to connect these words to their own lives.
Giving students the tools they need for success, such as a new way to experience their AP Psychology curriculum, is a wonderful way to guide them on their educational journey and prepare them for their future careers.
