Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students hail from some of the hardest hit COVID neighborhoods. I've worked with my students to ensure that their education did not pause during our remote learning period; in fact, their learning flourished. As a special education teacher, I found that my students who were nonverbal, had ADD, anxiety, or illnesses that caused prolonged periods of absence actually did better during our remote learning period than they did when we were in our regular classroom.

My students deserve the best education possible and I would like to ensure they get it by providing them with differentiated instruction that is tailored to what they are learning in our virtual classroom.

As NYC teenagers, many living near the poverty level, they often share computers, do their work on cell phones, are tasked with taking care of siblings, or work essential jobs. It is my job to deliver lessons to my students so they can engage in their education in a way that is easy and works for them.

Living in NYC, I taught all of my classes from my computer which sat on a plastic TV tray. My limited resources stunted the differentiation I was able to provide my students.

My Project

My students have a drive to succeed even when hit with the hardest of circumstances. I have students who have lost parents this year, students who will lose their housing this summer, students who have given birth to babies of their own, all during a global pandemic and a growing global awareness of the systemic racism that keeps most of them oppressed in a country where people are supposed to be created equal. Even while enduring all of this so early in their lives, my students pushed themselves to not just to finish the year, but to finish with the highest grades possible. With students who put in as much work and effort as mine do, I need to make sure I am able to meet their needs.

During remote learning, I was able to show my students videos, talk them through skills, and have them share out their answers, but something was missing, a white board!

We missed the interaction we had with the white board. My ELA students, composed of ELL students, general education students, and special education students, also missed seeing a sentence manipulated or corrected in the lesson, something that can't easily be conveyed when typed on a slide.

I can find videos showing the skill we're working on, but it isn't the same for my students as seeing sentences with their names or examples using the text that they're reading in the moment. It is my responsibility to make my lessons engaging, and to the point. My students will be engaged if I can use Explain Everything to create a virtual white board and personalized videos to engage my students. If I have an ipad and Apple pencil I can do just that. The earphones will help me be heard during our lessons.
