My Project

I am teaching 8th grade life science this year using OpenSciEd and NGSS standards. Students are in charge of their own learning through individual and group activities and projects, the majority of which will be done or glued into their notebook, as a portfolio of their learning. Students will also have the opportunity to express themselves creatively and show why the science they are learning matters to them. This is a resource intensive process, and pencils and gluesticks run out quick!

NGSS emphasizes 3D learning of science content, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts relevant to all science disciplines.

In other words, students develop many useful skills through learning exciting content. Students start off with an OpenSciEd project where they collect evidence to diagnose a fictional patient. We move on to examining a dead zone in the ocean to explore ecological relationships. We end the year with genetics and evolution, which both have many mini projects for students to explore the topics and connect science to the world around them.
