I am a fifth grade ESOL teacher at an extraordinary Baltimore City Public School. I have the wonderful opportunity to work with the fifth grade English Learners (ELs) through co-teaching and in small groups to improve literacy and oral language skills through reading, listening, speaking, and writing activities.
My students and their families come from all over the world, each bringing their own unique experiences.
They are incredibly eager to learn, as all students are. As ELs, my students often require individualized instruction that meets their personal learning needs and styles in order for them to thrive in the classroom. While my school does an incredible job at supporting students and teachers in any and every way they can, a teacher's salary and under-funding across the country make it difficult to meet their needs. Challenges and inequities for all students are especially apparent as educators are teaching through two pandemics - COVID-19 and the re-awakening to systemic racism. However, our scholars are incredibly resilient and are ready to take on the virtual learning challenge this fall.
My Project
Who says letter writing is a lost art? With these at-home, personalized pen pal kits, my fifth grade scholars will have the opportunity to keep in touch with some of their favorite people while enhancing their writing skills.
Students will receive all the tools necessary for letter writing and sending, in addition to a personalized list of addresses so that they can feel connected to our school community throughout virtual learning.
Through mini-lessons, writing conferences, and their own letters from me, students will strengthen their writing online and offline this Fall through a pen pal system.
