Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a new 5th grade teacher in New York City. I work in a part of New York City where children are lucky if they have some space to themselves at home. The school building I work in is where most the children from this community are able to “stretch” both their minds and bodies. This is my first year with a classroom, my second year at this school. I am hoping to provide my students with a comfortable classroom environment that promotes being “at home” but also allows them to understand responsibility and taking self-sufficiency. I think this is especially important for 5th grade students. I want my students to take pride in setting goals and controlling their academic careers.

Being my first year in the classroom, I have many ideas, a multitude of strategies, and the desire to take it all in…what I lack? Supplies! Often times I see that students have the capability to be successful students but lack the ability to keep organized and learn how to take ownership of their duties. I feel that at home, many of my students share their personal spaces and are never given the chance to be “own” something. I want to give my students space in the classroom where they can store their own papers. The piece of furniture I hope to supply my students with would give them “mail boxes” so they can learn organization, efficiency and begin t take control of their own duties as students. This will evoke skills that are essential not only for school, but also for life.

Students will use this furniture within our daily routine. Folders with important papers, materials, notices will be placed in these folders. Students are responsible for emptying these “cubbies” and will be held accountable for being prepared and ready for class. This will promote organization, independence and again, self pride in learning how to be young adults.

With this said, I am asking for someone to donate the funds for this classroom mailbox/cubby hole furniture piece . With your help, you will help me ensure that children that are not so lucky can know and appreciate what it means to be thought of. I am hoping that you can understand the impact of being thought of, what a strong message it will give to my students, and how it will help them take pride in their academics. Pride that I hope will carry them through 5th grade, and grow in middle school and onward.
