My Students

My third graders are about to face something no one could ever have imagined…..starting a new school year completely online and not getting to know their new teacher or classmates in person. The changes will be staggering, though having spent the last months of last year online, it won’t be completely new to them. Creating a rapport with each other will have to come through a computer instead of the little notes I can leave on their work, or the smiley face to encourage them to keep on trying. I will be striving for as much interaction as possible with my students and their work and looking for new ways and technology to do so.

My Project

Getting to know brand new students without being in the same room is going to be a challenge, but with the help of an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, it will be much easier! No classroom can function without a whiteboard, and an iPad used with our video conference software becomes a whiteboard that I can write on naturally with an Apple pencil, and share with my students...all in the effort to provide more engaging and interactive lessons. This particularly applies to math where real-time, handwritten work is shown and shared....you just can't draw diagrams and write fractions and show your work with a keyboard!

Having this new iPad will allow me to use the newest apps to create digital lessons that I can upload and can be used asynchronously by my students.

Additionally, having the iPad as an extra device will allow me to use the video conference software for a breakout room for a small group to work together while I can digitally keep an eye on them and work with a small group of my own which is something that will increase student interactivity.

I plan to use the Apple pencil to write directly on my students' digital documents, providing input and encouragement much as I would leave handwritten notes or an encouragement sticker on a piece of their work in our regular classroom.

These are the things that help us get to know each other and help build a trusting and caring learning environment. I also plan on using the iPad to audio record myself reading books for students to listen to, and video recording myself teaching lessons that can be watched by students as and when needed.
