Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My middle and high school students love color, artwork and artists that are culturally accessible, inspiring and challenging. Though they relate to different kinds of art exploring a wide range of mediums with expectations of excellence in their work, they tend to thrive when introduced to an artist that they can relate to on a personal and cultural level. This project introduces students to twentieth and twenty first century artists who were or are in some ways marginalized who often began their careers by showing their work in 'unauthorized' public venues in the form of graffiti, i.e. Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Shepard Fairy, Shamisia Hassani and others.

Students will use the pencils and sketch pad to map out their visual, social and personally meaningful designs.

They then will begin to execute their designs on sketch paper using markers to create their own graffiti language and message. Upon completion, students will mount their 'graffiti' artwork for exhibition on mat board. The project will culminate with a small gallery like opening where they will have the opportunity to discuss their artwork with members of the school community.

The majority of students at our school come from socio-economically challenged communities with rich cultural roots who would benefit greatly from the materials for this project.

Equipping them with such materials would allow them to express their vision with and empowered sense of purpose.
