This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

For my students to have the life-changing experience in drama that I want them to have, I need enough copies of the script we're using for our production (The Laramie Project) so that everyone has one of their own. I teach eighth-grade English and drama (for students in sixth-eighth grade) at an arts-centered middle school for the gifted and talented in East Harlem. I am extremely passionate about forcing students out of their comfort zones, bringing texts and ideas to my drama class that challenge and surprise them.

The drama program at my school has absolutely no money. This means that often I pay for supplies I need out of pocket; otherwise, it won't happen. I feel very passionately about paying writers for the work they produce, so I'm opposed to photocopying a script for my students to use in rehearsals. As you can imagine, this places me in a double bind: I either honor the integrity of the writer by purchasing published materials at my own expense, or I photocopy a script for my students and compromise my own integrity.

If I had 40 copies of The Laramie Project, each student involved could have their own to take home. We could also keep a set at the school building for those students who will, inevitably, forget to bring their own copy to rehearsals. With plenty of scripts, my students are ensured a successful and eye-opening experience this year in drama.

It's all up to you. With your help, I can give my students the kind of experience in drama that I didn't have during the school day when I was their age. They shouldn't have to go elsewhere for enriching experiences in the performing arts when they attend an arts-focused school. Please help me give these kids the creative outlet they desperately need!
