Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My top group of readers are reading on a 6th to 7th grade reading level. Our school is Pre-K through 5th, and doesn't have many novels for higher grade level readers to read.

I purchased the first Percy Jackson book (Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief) for this group to read.

I have never seen a group of students more excited about reading a novel. One students said, with tears in her eyes, "I'm so happy we get to read a real novel!" One of the boys constantly says, "Can we take it home to read? What if I read more than what you say, is that ok?" They have actually put down the electronics and picked up a book and are quite happy about it!

My Project

These books will enrich the lives of these students by enhancing their love of reading. Because these books are based on Mythology, they allow the individual reader to enter into the realm of imagination, adventure and excitement.

Reading will also increase their vocabulary, their understanding of the world and it will broaden their horizons.

They will remember their experience reading these books and draw fond memories of learning about how the Ancient Greeks believed things happened, though we know things, such as seasons, are explained by science. This will allow them to have an open mind and accept opinions more readily.
