Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love to read. Most of all, they love to read books that are interesting, exciting, and challenging. My students also love to learn about mythology. They see the universal themes so clearly and love applying them to their own lives. These books will help my students greatly!

My students love coming to school.

Many of them don't want to leave at the end of the day. They are voracious readers and are eager to learn about anything they can. They don't have a lot of background knowledge, because they often come from poor, immigrant, refugee, or under-educated families. When they get to school, though, they are ready to work hard. They deserve the opportunity to read interesting, exciting, stimulating books, even though they can't afford to buy the books themselves. That's where this project comes in! This year, we focused on Greek mythology as a way to teach general themes, as well as vocabulary. My students couldn't get enough! They dubbed Zeus/Jupiter a "player" and identified strongly with Callisto and Arcus. They will always remember the word "arachnid" because they have such a strong visual of of Arachne turning into a spider. My students love to be engaged with imagery, rich language, and deep and complex stories, and this book will give them that.

My Project

My students need a class set of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief to study mythology. In 4th Grade Common Core, students need to learn Greek and Latin root words. While that could be boring if you memorize, by teaching myths and including the vocabulary, students remember better, and get to read some really interesting stories along the way. We will start with Ancient Greece and Rome, and how civilizations throughout time have created their own mythologies to explain and give meaning to the world. We will read at least 4 short myths. Students often see parallels between these myths and stories from their own religious beliefs, which is a deep and interesting discussion to have. Then, we will read Percy Jackson, focusing on theme and myth. As we go, students will learn Greek and Latin roots to help with their vocabulary. Finally, students will write their own myths, describing how something in the modern world was created. My next book will be Harry Potter, and students will use their knowledge to find parallel themes and compare and contrast characters.

This project will help my students in their love of reading.

Many of them see movies and have no idea there is a book! They do not realize the joy of reading, and once they do, you can see how it changes them. The students who have discovered it are always borrowing books, bringing books into conversations, and comparing things to literature. I want that for ALL my students, not just the ones who have supportive/English speaking parents at home. All students deserve to love reading.
