My students need 2 glockenspiels for the opportunity to play a pitched percussion instrument and help teach rhythm, steady beat, pitch recognition and more.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine you're racing up and down the scale, playing arpeggios, creating new beats, and making sounds that you didn't know were possible. Now open your eyes to the reality that you don't have that chance since you don't have an instrument in your hands. It's hard to be creative without resources.
I'm fortunate to work with about 450 brilliant, elementary students on a daily basis.
We go to a large urban school in a fairly low-income neighborhood. The vast majority of my students come from families where English is not their main medium for communication and yet they strive to excel in math and reading and are fluent in both languages. Though my students come from a low SES background, they are innovative and creative, not letting boundaries stop them. Music gives my students an outlet to create and innovate and takes hold of their attention. Their eyes light up when they can take music making into their own hands and create something absolutely new.
My Project
Pitched percussion instruments give my students a chance to explore new ways to create music. Patting, clapping, and speaking rhythms can only take us so far. Pitched percussion gives the students a chance to change those rhythm exercises into melodies, songs, and compositions. They realize that what they're doing is making music and not just keeping a beat. Each glockenspiel will give two students at a time the chance to literally take the music into their own hands and create. With more instruments, more students will have the opportunity to make music instead of just watching is being made by others.
I hear my students singing and humming in the hallways, on the playground, and all over the building every day. They have the inspiration and just need an outlet. These instruments would provide my kids a chance to create, improvise, and compose in a new and fascinating medium.
They say that practice makes perfect.
With two more glockenspiels in the room, every student would have more opportunities to practice, compose, and explore. I want all of my students to have an equal chance at making a unique creation and honing their skills. I don't want my students' creativity or passion to be squelched just because they don't have the resources available to them. Each person deserves a chance.
