Only one student is reading on level, so we need tools to help students catch up on writing and reading quickly. The kids recently learned about a table of contents, and are very excited to point this out when they find one! The students also enjoy learning new vocabulary words and using them in their writing.
One hundred percent of the class has family income below the poverty level.
Many learners do not come to school prepared to learn and do not bring basic supplies. Having a sharpened pencil ready to go for each child would helps us make the most of instructional minutes. Every minute counts, as only one child is reading at the third grade level. The rest of my class is reading at K, 1st, or 2nd grade level.
My students need pencils to write fabulous stories and persuasive essays. We want to maximize our learning time and use every minute on learning, not pencil sharpening. Our school also doesn't have any manual pencil sharpeners and I have burned out two electric ones. Thus, having pre-sharpened pencils is a life saver. We will use these pencils in numerous ways. We will write stories about "small moments" of our lives, research autobiographies, and write editorials. We will share the wonders of our imagination after reading. Pencils will be used to analyze our city's history and to conduct science experiments about mealworms.
I have the best class in the world, full of budding engineers, authors, lawyers, artists, and entrepreneurs.
We only have a few pencils left in our class and my budget has been stretched thin buying supplies this year. Please help our wonderful learners!
