Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in Brooklyn. We are a small school, with approximately four hundred students. Our class has thirty four students. Seventy-one percent of our students are entitled to free lunch due to living below the poverty line. I teach in a special education class with approximately forty percent of the class having special needs.
This class has a wonderful mix of personalities.
There are several students with severe behavioral challenges and other students who are so shy that making eye contact can be difficult. As a whole, we have a fantastic time in class. The students and teachers laugh a lot in class. We try to make learning fun. I am most proud of how the students interact with one another. At the beginning of the year, there were many verbal scuffles and mistreating one another.
Now, I am proud to say that we coexist more as a family. The students are helpful with one another and everyone is treated with the respect and courtesy that they deserve. This environment is conducive for a wonderful learning atmosphere. Our students are learning, but our lack of materials hinders our progress.
My Project
Our students are lacking basic supplies in order to be successful in class. These materials will benefit the students by giving them the materials they so desperately need to achieve their mathematical learning. They have the desire to do well, but are sometimes unable to access what they need to do their work.
If these materials were in the hands of our students, they would make such a drastic difference by giving the students mathematical manipulatives to aid in their learning.
The students would have access to these materials, and therefore be able to work towards their full potential and achieve high academic success. Please help our students with these materials, the students will definitely put these supplies to good use!! Our students are amazing children with a tremendous amount of potential.
