My Students

I teach sixth-grade English Language Arts in New Orleans, Louisiana. I help students discover their skills as critical readers of the world around them. I help them use their voices to change the narratives that have been written about them and inform their own identities.

I teach students who come from all over the city of New Orleans based on a promise to get them to and through college.

I teach predominantly students of color who receive free and reduced price lunch and travel long distances to attend our school. I believe in our national promise to educate all of America's children to the best of our abilities.

My Project

Pencils are the tools my students wield to change the world. There is often a shortage of pencils at my school. Students are asked to bring their own pencils to school but don't always do so. A pencil is the most empowering tool I can give a student in my classroom besides a book. It is the weapon with which they shape and reform their own perspectives of themselves and the world around them. It gives them the ability to express themselves when so many others seek to define my students without even knowing them. It is their microphone in a sea of voices seeking to discount them.
