My Students

"The pencil sharpener doesn't sharpen my pencil well, teacher!" This cry of help is echoed in my classroom of 32 first graders everyday. It's frustrating when students' basic need of learning, such as a usable pencil, is denied.

My students come from low income families.

My district is one of the largest in the country but can't provide any funding for teachers to purchase classroom supplies. With 32 students in the classroom, we go through 60-70 pencils each day. We don't have the proper equipment to sharpen their pencil efficiently and speedily.

My Project

Simple, we just want to have functional pencils to write. My students have writer's workshop everyday where they write in a variety of genre. They need pencils to do math. They are also learning Chinese. Many Chinese characters have 20-30 strokes. These characters require precise markings or else the meaning will be altered. In acquiring both English (spelling) and Chinese (writing characters), the learners need to practice penmanship in order to master the production of a word. Without functional pencils, this task can't be done.

With the donations for the electronic sharpener, we can reduce the sharpening time and apply that to meaningful instructional time.

The sight of sharpened pencils encourages students to dive into learning. It will bring excitement and production in the lives of our classroom live. Thank you.
