My Project

The book The Hero Two Doors Down by Sharon Robinson offers an inspiring story about friendship, courage, and the power of community. For this pen pal project, 5th grade students and college students in a children's literature class will connect through their shared reading experience. Each week, both groups will read a section of the book, reflecting on its themes, characters, and lessons. They will then write journal entries in response to specific prompts, which will be exchanged between the two groups. These journals will serve as a way to discuss the book's deeper meanings, while also fostering connections between students of different ages and backgrounds.

The project not only promotes reading comprehension and critical thinking, but also enhances writing skills and encourages thoughtful communication.

As 5th graders connect with college students, they will have the opportunity to ask questions, share personal reflections, and gain new perspectives. For college students, this project offers a chance to engage in mentorship and learn how to communicate complex ideas to younger audiences. The shared experience of reading The Hero Two Doors Down will serve as a powerful foundation for developing meaningful, cross-generational friendships and insights.
