Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The transition from middle-to-high school does not come smoothly for all students. In middle school, students start to seek independence and manage their own responsibilities, such as time management and assignments.

By high school, students gain even more freedom, making decisions about their education, extracurriculars, and future goals.

This transition can be exciting, yet challenging, for many students.

With the assistance of our upperclassmen, JDHS provides all incoming freshmen access to a peer mentor (upperclassman). To ease the transition, our upperclassmen are trained to facilitate engaging bi-weekly outreach sessions (activities) to freshmen on various SEL related topics. Furthermore, our upperclassmen (mentors) become informational resources for freshman. The supplies listed will support our upperclassmen (mentors) with training and will be utilized in providing outreach sessions to freshmen. For example, mentors will use binders to house activity curriculum and edits. Smaller notebooks will be utilized as journals for self/peer reflection of activities and experiences. Jumbo Dice and stress balls be utilized during several activities as tools to build student engagement. Eye masks are utilized during an activity that challenges students to collaborate on a task using limited communication to overcome a challenge. The snacks will help provide our leaders with a treat for all of the work that they do as mentors.

Currently, we have over 90 mentors (upperclassmen) providing mentorship to over 600 freshmen.
