Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from one of the most diverse and dynamic neighborhoods in New York City, a neighborhood bursting with new businesses and hip residents. Despite this, my students walk out of their public housing units and are confronted with poverty, inequality, segregation, gangs, and violence. All of this happens just a few blocks away from a hip cafes and brand new apartment buildings. These little ten-year-olds live the inequality we hear about all the time. We might not be able to solve this blatant disparity in their childhood, but through education we can equip their fight to become leaders and change our world for the better.

Their fight isn't an easy one.

It requires leaving all the stress of their home lives at the door and walking in ready to take risks and persevere in their studies. It requires living in a world where they have to prove themselves more just because of the color of their skin. They do it anyway. I hold high expectations for my students, and they reach them time and again. These kids are wide-eyed, passionate learners, and, with your help, future leaders.

My Project

My students are practically begging me for these exercise peddlers! Ever since we borrowed one from a neighboring teacher, exercise peddlers are all we can talk about. My students are high-energy, fun-loving learners who really, really need to get their energy out! They always learn so much more when they're moving, and these exercise peddlers would give them the opportunity to release some energy while learning at their seats. If every student had one, they could use it to help them focus on their learning whenever they felt like they needed it.

"Ms. Herbig, can I please use the bicycle today??", 18 students beg me as they walk into class every morning.

They're obsessed! Those students who have tried it, already see the benefits. They've seen themselves become more productive and focused. They are less likely to get up out of their seat or get tired or bored during the school day. If funded, this project will make a huge difference to my students. All 18 of them are so capable, bright, and have come so far already, I almost cannot imagine the gains they would make if they had this support in the classroom. For students like mine, who are very active and hyper learners, this would make a world of difference. With this resource, I would soon have a classroom full of exercise pedaling scholars!
