Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are from Sunset, Brooklyn and are in a Pre K 4 All school. This program gives children from all cultures, areas, and various incomes an opportunity to learn and thrive within the district. My energetic preschoolers enter the classroom ready to learn, discover, and explore.

They gleefully read books, draw pictures, build structures, participate in science experiments and pretend play throughout the day.

They beam with joy as they proudly identify letters and discover sounds. Coming to school is very obvious an enormous part of their development. They love to learn!

My Project

One of the first things you see in a Reggio Emilia classroom is natural colors and wooden toys. In this project, I am requesting wooden toys, a natural grassy carpet for project learning and beautiful baskets for storage. These types of material would help us begin the process of implementing this Reggio curriculum.

Wooden manipulatives and clay experiences will require children to use their own imagination to play while expanding their minds.

Wooden toys do not have electronic parts or voice commands that will instruct them on what to do. In the Reggio Emilia curriculum, we want young children to have choices on what to do and give them opportunities to open their creative minds. Having these materials in the classroom would allow our students to use their reasoning skills and make a choice on which activities they see fit. Open-ended toys like these will stimulate imaginative play and require different types of intelligence like emotional, thinking, and social skills. They will also assist with motor skills and problem-solving such as when they are attempting to make a plan on how to build towers or bridges. Children also begin to exercise their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination with toys instead of simply pressing buttons and watching. The texture of wooden toys and clay would provide a sensory experience to our little ones who need extra support and require a multi-sensory approach to learning. Having the right tools in a pre k classroom will provide so many benefits in the lives of little children and would be a great first step towards creating our Reggio classroom.
