Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Sometimes students are dealing with emotions that make it difficult for them to concentrate and learn in class. These emotions can make it really hard for them to make good decisions. When students are faced with these uncomfortable feelings, they have a difficult time being the best they can be. Having a calming space like the Peace Zone can provide the students at our elementary school with a space to take care of these feelings. The Peace Zone will provide a safe space where students can practice calming strategies and improve self-regulation. It is a space that will not be viewed as a form of punishment, but rather a tool that is available when experiencing strong emotions and needing a break to calm down.

Teaching students multiple ways to calm down and the benefits to having a relaxing place to focus on their feelings is so fundamental to their mental health.

Tools like sensory objects and breathing balls are perfect items to help a student calm and refocus. Posters related to mental health can serve as visuals to support the calm down process and to support with increasing social-emotional vocabulary, given that sometimes students lack the language to discuss a problem. Soft furnishings such as bean bag chairs, pillows, a soft rug, floor cushions and a colorful calming light makes the calming space comfortable and soothing for students. This calming space will serve as a designation for students to take care of their feelings and a safe space to go to calm their body and mind.
