My Students

My middle school students need a way to exercise and participate in movement activities. Our school has a small playground that is used primarily by the younger children in the building as the equipment is appropriate for and built for younger children.

The children in my class are middle school-aged children, 11-13, with autism.

Our school is a self-contained special education school serving children with autism, multiple handicaps, and other developmental disabilities. My class consists of 3 boys and 3 girls who vary greatly in cognitive abilities. Two of my students have physical limitations which make running and playing without adult assistance quite difficult. They are all, however, very energetic and willing and happy to participate in any group activity or physical activity that I present to them.

My Project

I attended a Yoga class about a month ago and enjoyed it very much. I started to think about how I could incorporate a Yoga program into the school day for my students. I began to do a bit of research online and found many articles and web sites devoted to the benefits of yoga for children and young adults with autism. It will soon be winter here in the Northeast and my young adult students will no longer be able to go outside for a classroom break. They will be confined to the classroom for the entire day. The two students in my class who have some mobility issues will be able to fully participate as most Yoga programs can be easily adapted to become either a sitting or standing activity. I think that a session of yoga each day for my students will be a wonderful addition to our middle school program. It will provide the children with a way to participate in an activity that will do their bodies, minds, and spirits a world of good!

We have begun to "switch classes" in our middle school program.

Our middle school consists of three classes totaling 18 children. If this project is funded and I am able to begin a Yoga program, I will be using the materials to provide weekly Yoga classes for all 18 children. Your donation will absolutely have an immediate impact on the quality of the school day and daily life of all 18 students. I thank you in advance from the bottom of my heart for your generosity.
