This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Many students need a calming place when things get a little stressful. As a school counselor, I work with many "at-risk" students who are in need of learning positive coping strategies when faced with life's challenges. Most students come from the lower-income status. Due to an array of family stressors and/or lack of resources, often times these stressors carry over to the school setting. Our school's goal is to create a supportive learning environment where students can access social emotional supports and still be successful academically.
My Project
All of our students want to be successful in the classroom. Unfortunately, for some it is not an easy task. Many arrive with personal/family stressors on their minds that often get in the way of their ability to focus and learn, especially if they are among 32+ other students in a classroom.
Being able to take a break in an outdoor garden area, where the setting is quiet and peaceful, can be beneficial.
This setting, including the requested benches and planter, will give students the opportunity to practice some coping strategies like deep breathing, relaxation techniques, or just sitting in a quiet area among flowers, vegetable gardens, and painted rocks (made by students) with positive affirmations on them. This Peace Garden will benefit our students greatly as they will see our school not only as a place for learning academics, but also as a place of support in dealing with social emotional challenges.
