My classroom is comprised of 6th-8th graders from all over the world. I love the diversity that the refugee and immigrant students in my classroom contribute to our classroom culture.
They each have an incredible story of survival and courage.
They are excited to learn a new language and be successful in school. They have hopes, dreams and goals. I count it a privilege to be their teacher. We are part of a school community that celebrates uniqueness, creativity, and diverse backgrounds. I am in awe of them.
My Project
When students come to school, they bring all of their emotional issues and scars with them. In order to cope with these issues they need a safe, calming atmosphere in which to learn. The items I've chosen will provide students with that atmosphere. It is my hope that they can form positive relationships with their classmates and me when they have the opportunity to be in a calming environment within the traditional classroom setting.
The students need to feel safe in order to share their stories and heal.
A peace corner will be set up in the classroom where students can begin this process. They need a place to calm down from conflict and find resolution. The chairs purchased will provide comfort and make students feel more relaxed. Instead of this place being a punitive "time out" corner, they can be provided with a place to really work through problems and find solutions. The lava lamp, diffuser, and aquarium will provide a calming ambiance. Students can care for the aquarium and plants themselves making the space feel more like their own. The dividing screen provides privacy for those moments when students are either acting on their emotions or sharing conversation that needs to be kept confidential. This environment will help students become more mindful of their choices and the positive outcomes that can come from choosing the right responses.
Building self-esteem and confidence will be very important for the students as they spend the school year learning English. Student incentives such as pencils, stickers, and certificates will motivate students to attend school and give them confidence in their academic performance. A student of the week will be featured in order for students to get to know their classmates and the certificates purchased will help students feel celebrated.
