My Students

I am a first grade teacher with many students who come from backgrounds of trauma and tragedy. I am continuously studying Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and how to be a strong educator in trauma informed practices. According to the Center for Disease Control, 35% of children have experienced two or more ACEs, which include incarceration of a family member and drug and alcohol exposure, etc. Back in 2013, about 50% of children in Los Angeles County have experienced 1-3 ACEs (Kidsdata).

From my experience during my first year of teaching, I saw that many of my students had difficulty regulating their emotions and expressed those emotions through physical or verbal aggression.

A few practices I would like to incorporate into my classroom this year include a peace corner, where students can get away from overwhelming classroom stresses to reflect on their emotions and incorporate strategies they have learned from social and emotional lessons to regulate their emotions.

A peace corner encompasses a small area in the classroom, filled with a comfy rug and chair, reading materials, reflection sheets, and other activities to help students to reflect and breathe for a few minutes before returning to their classwork.

My Project

This project is a step toward my goal of being a strong educator in trauma informed practices. I want my classroom to be a safe space for all students where they can be successful in improving and strengthening school skills and learning social emotional strategies.

Each of the resources in my project will help students to find time to practice regulation strategies by taking a step away from classroom stressors to have time to practice social emotional regulation strategies.

My whole class will also benefit from the relaxing effects of essential oils and lessons from each of the picture books. I plan on extending social emotional lessons through discussions and projects with the books from my project, then giving the students access to these books for their own reading time.
