Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 20 wonderful, energetic, brilliant, empathetic 2nd graders at a Title I school on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. My school is truly barrier-free; we serve every child who comes to us. We have 10% ENL learners and 33% students with diagnosed learning disabilities. 100% of students at my school qualify for free and reduced breakfast and lunch.

My school has amazing practices around restorative circles and restorative justice, and my classroom would benefit from a peace corner.

My Project

My school is very focused on social-emotional support of students. Most classrooms have a peace corner, a place for students to calm themselves and find peace, particularly pre-escalation.

Because I just transferred to this school, I have yet to create a peace corner, but it is such an important part of the school culture and my students have been asking for this space already in the first 8 days of school.

Students will be able to sit in their own space within the classroom, choose a breathing exercise or calming tactic, then return to academics. Thank you in advance for your help!
