As a school psychologist in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom. Many of our youngest students come to school excited to learn despite facing these challenges.
My amazing students are eager to learn through play, movement and songs.
In addition to learning their early literacy and math skills, they are taking time to develop socially and emotionally. They are learning to share, take turns, and express their feelings to their friends. We work hard at my school to create a safe learning atmosphere and to help our children learn important skills to cope with the stress they may face in their daily lives.
My students need fun materials to learn positive ways to cope with stressors and manage their emotions. We need beanbag chairs, jumbo timers, Theraputty and other materials. Early learning classrooms will have calm down areas with materials to help the students regulate and process their feelings in a safe way. Stethoscopes will help our students listen to their heart rate as while they calm down. Bean bag chairs will provide a safe and comfortable area for the students to process their emotions. Emotion blocks and books will help my students learn how to use words to describe what they are feeling.
Your donations will help create a safe place for students to process their emotions and also teach them how to cope with the everyday challenges that they face.
Research has shown that teaching social and emotional skills to younger students has a more positive impact than waiting to address these needs later in their educational career. My school places a large emphasis on equipping young students with positive strategies to manage difficult situations as they arise. Students are more available for learning when they feel calm, safe, and supported. Your generous donations will change students' lives for the better because they will help them have a positive school experience and develop a love for learning at an early age.
