My Project

My students are refugees from war torn countries. They are immigrants who left their loved ones behind and walked for miles for an opportunity to get an education. They have endured trauma during this journey. Now they need to learn English and learn it fast. They're in 9th grade. They only have a few years to master academic English which normally takes up to 10 years. They need a peaceful environment and the tools to learn and practice English every day. Please, help me help them. I teach English as a Second Language to students ages 15 -18. I provide headphones so that my students can continue to practice listening and speaking skills even when they're not with me in an English class. The headphones I used to have are mostly broken and staticy. We need a new class set. I will use the wobble chairs around my round table for small group instruction. I teach them how to read and spell in English in small groups. These chairs will also be useful for students who cannot sit still for an extended period of time. Our Instructional blocks are 90 minutes. This can be a long period of time for my students with ADHD. Sometimes trauma has ADHD type symptoms as well. Wobble chairs can help my students stay focused.
