My Students

I love these students. They are hardworking and goofy, socially active and optimistic, loving and strong-willed. This is a monolingual inclusion classroom, which means I teach in English and some students have special needs. We have artists, musicians, creators, and critics in this class, and these skills overpower any physical, learning, or behavioral challenges that students face.

As a class, we focus on how race and power affect our lives and the world.

The racial breakdown of this year's group is complicated--mostly because race is "made-up" as we say. That does not diminish its importance though. Just over half of the class identifies as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) or multiracial. Multiple students speak other languages at home, and many others live with adults who speak other languages but only speak English with their children.

Above all, this group is curious. I work hard to not only encourage their curiosity, but create space for it daily. These are the kids who will drive future teachers and professors crazy because they ask so many questions, and I'm fine with that.

My Project

Our classroom community seeks to prioritize collectivist learning practices. Culturally relevant teaching prioritizes students "returning to the hive" to develop ideas collectively. This creates a very healthy buzz of learning, even behind face masks.

These headphones allow students to work independently while others collaborate.

The headphones dampen ambient sound to increase calm and focus for an individual. Some students with auditory processing challenges or high anxiety can struggle in an active learning environment. These tools will increase their ability to focus and work in a productive environment.

Ultimately, my goal is for students to always return to the hive. These tools will just allow some of them to process individually first.
