My Students

Welcome to our classroom, where you will see a diverse group of 3rd-5th graders who range in abilities and come from different socioeconomic backgrounds. My classroom services students who are identified with high functioning autism, students who are twice exceptional (autistic and gifted), as well as students with other health impairments. They are a loving and dynamic group of kids who have many interests and ways in which they like to learn. Students spend a majority of their time in my classroom working in small groups, rotating to different stations, and working with either myself, our support staff, or independently. Throughout the day we address grade level standards and IEP goals in a variety of ways that motivate and engage them. In our classroom, we are a family and I love my students like they are my own. They bring a smile to my face by telling their funny jokes and stories, showing support for each other, and by how hard they work. They motivate me to do my very best. My students keep me on my toes and everyday I'm trying to learn how to communicate with them better and address them as a whole.

My Project

With limited funding for PE equipment, my classroom is stuck with basic things like some balls, jump ropes, and bean bags. I'm finding that my games to teach motor skills are getting old and I don't want to lose students' interest. I want to continue to keep them motivated and show them how they can get fit and have fun at the same time. The possibilities with scooters are endless. Students will work on motor skills, team building, and cooperation. To go with the scooters, my students can learn the concept of hockey, but with a twist. Students can play floor hockey and get even more exercise using the scooters. My students love tag. The rock tag game will keep them running, strategizing, and working together as a team. Finally, I need the scooter stand to properly store the scooters so they will last for years to come.

Physical education won't just address my students' physical health, but also their emotional health.

Research has shown that physical education can reduce stress and help students focus. It also helps improve academic performance. Along with this, regular exercise has shown to reduce behavioral issues. These materials will make a difference in my students' academic performance by allowing them to get that vigorous exercise needed to maintain focus. It will help them pay attention to instruction and give them an opportunity to move.
