Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at a Title I school in the Bronx and my students have been through many changes this year. It seems as if every month has brought us new challenges, but my students inspire me to think positively with their continuous optimism.

My students are full of positive energy.

Despite the trials this year has put them through, they are always laughing and smiling and having a good time. Some of my favorite memories from teaching virtually last year were when my students would submit videos of themselves dancing and having fun for our assignments. They always manage to look on the bright side, and I am happy to teach them a class that allows them to get up and move, especially with how long they've spent learning behind the computer.

My Project

Many of my students struggle with their emotions and lack an effective means of communicating what they are feeling, which is a huge roadblock to getting help for what they are dealing with. My goal is to create and furnish a "chill out zone" with books on emotions and how to healthily express and manage them where my students can go to cool down when they are feeling overwhelmed.

Using the "A Little SPOT" book sets, I will start a small library focused on mental health and emotional wellbeing for my students in our chill-out zone.

The goal is to give my students the resources to better express themselves and learn more about their emotions and eventually other community-building skills like safety, responsibility, and kindness.
