Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is an elementary school that serves approximately 450 children living in the South Bronx, a low-income community in New York City. While our scholars come to us with many important assets and skills - they speak many different languages! They have grit! They are creative and curious! - We have found that many enter school without the social emotional skills that all children need to succeed in school, form healthy relationships, and eventually excel in the workplace.

To address part of this issue we use an evidence-based Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework that monitors, manages and rewards the positive behaviors of our scholars.

My Project

To promote a safe and inviting learning culture at our school we adapted the evidence-based Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework that monitors, manages and rewards the positive behaviors of our scholars. PBIS has been shown to improve social, emotional and academic outcomes for all students, including students with disabilities and student from underrepresented groups.

At its heart, PBIS helps us teach our scholars about behavior, just as we would teach about any other subject - like reading or math.

Scholars receive points on the class dojo app by being respectful, responsible and safe throughout the school day. We have found that exchanging points for tangible incentives are one great way to engage our scholars and create excitement for our PBIS Tier 1 Rewards Program. However, coming up with incentives ., especially those that cost money - can be a challenging task as public school educators. That is why we need YOUR help in doing this work to truly have a long-term, positive affect on our scholars' life both inside and outside of our school building.

You donation, big or small, will help allow us to stock our "PBIS Store" where students are allowed to go "shopping" with the points they have earned during the school week. Each classroom will visit the PBIS store at a different point during the week, when students will be able to exchange their class dojo/PBIS points for these various prizes.

Please help us start 2020 off successfully by creating a strong PBIG culture from day one. We appreciate you and your commitment to making positive changes in public education!
